2014 Blog Hop Interview
July 28th, 2014

Andrea Burgay has asked me to take part in a world wide blog hop by answering four interview questions about my work and inviting other artists to do the same on August 4th.

Here’s my selection of artists:
Josh Slater
Geoff Kim
Gloria Vilches

1. What are you currently working on?

I’m about to begin a video project with the band Pre-War for a song on their forthcoming album. I’m excited about moving more into analog based animation, and experimenting with processes that apply collaging ideas to motion based works.
2. How does your work differ from others of its genre?

I try not to think of collage as a genre – It happens to be a medium that I enjoy working with, but I’d like to think of myself as relating more to the genre of modern abstraction than collage per se. That said, within the tradition of collage, I try to eschew certain aspects that I see commonly, such as the use of nostalgia or immediately recognizable/iconic imagery. For me the work is more about the sum of the parts, than the parts themselves.
3. Why do you create what you do?

For cathartic and meditative purposes.

4. How does your creating process work?

I’ve been experimenting with different processes now that I have a larger studio. As far as straight cut and paste work goes, lately I’ve been making fast, impulsive pre-collages, that are then cut up and layered into a final composition – sometimes with small wooden blocks that serve as a backing for the individual layers and create depth in the piece. Paint has also been finding it’s way into more and more of the work.
